Events which we cannot control happen all the time. Sometimes, it might benefit us and other times, it hurt us. We generally call this “luck” and pretty much everyone agrees that we cannot change it.
However, there ARE things that we can control. Consider Rick Santelli and Jim Cramer’s rants on the government.
Rick Santelli’s Rant of the Year
Jim Cramer’s Version a Year Ago
They were both passionate and basically argued the same points in that the government’s actions are inadequate, wrong or nonexistent. Rick’s rant was celebrated (it still is as I write this) and Jim’s behavior was deemed “out of control” after it went live. So what was really the difference?
In the early half of 2007, not many people knew how bad the mortgage mess was. As a result, Jim’s message didn’t resonate at all. Compare that to today when so many either already lost their job or are scared of losing it, and the reaction is so different.
Persuasion as It Relates to Timing
Next time you want to deliver a message of importance, consider how they can relate to it.
1. Could you borrow facts from the news?
2. What about recent events related to the company (if it’s company related)
3. Use similar language that they are accustomed to at the time.
While there are way too many other factors, knowing the timing of your message will only help you get your way.
